Overcoming barriers

Warren's story of learning.

Warren

‘My reading, writing, spelling is OK but I do have lots of times where I struggle.’

Warren had plenty of friends at high school but he found the work a bit of a struggle. He’s lived in the same community for his entire life and is happy being close to his family. Warren really wants to get his driver’s licence. He knows that if he can get his driver’s licence, new employment options will open up for him.

‘My reading, writing, spelling is OK but I do have lots of times where I struggle. I prefer to be out in the garden than sitting here doing the school work.’

The Learn Local that Warren attends is close to where he lives. Sometimes he walks there, sometimes he catches the bus depending on his mood. He is always happy to help and tends the community garden in his spare time.

Warren’s trainer supports him with his reading, writing and maths skills. She knows what his goals are and tailors her lessons to suit his needs.

‘All the times I’ve had problems, I find you’ve just got to be patient and ask the teacher to help you out.’

Although Warren is clearly in his comfort zone in the garden, the environment at his Learn Local allows him to combine his training with his passion.
