Building new skills

“Before I get very nervous – now I’m waiting, waiting to get back on Monday.”

Vui came to live in Australia after the Vietnam War over 36 years ago. She could not speak or understand English. Over the years, she has found support at Yarraville Community Centre.

“I learn many things here and I’m very happy.”

Vui is currently learning how to use a computer. She has discovered that one of the biggest benefits is that she can communicate better with others.

“Now I can email my son. He can’t speak Vietnamese but we can email each other.”

For many older people, learning computers and basic internet skills is not only about accessing information. It is also a great way to keep in touch with family and friends.

“Before, I don’t know, I was nervous. Now I am using email and eBay.”

The computer and English classes at Yarraville Community Centre have become an important part of Vui’s life. She feels comfortable and has made many friends.

“The people in my class are good friends too, and I am learning many new things in the world.”
