Older man smiling in front of a brick wall

Opening new doors

Milad migrated to Australia in the late 1990s from Beirut. He worked hard for 20 years in different workplaces, including a factory and a laundry business. He was lucky because he was able to work at these places even though he had a lot of difficulty reading and writing.

“My family helped me with my reading the writing.”

Milad gained a lot of experience in these workplaces, so much so that when he moved to Ballarat – he was hopeful that he could start his own business.

“But I could not do the paperwork required to run it.”

Milad started volunteering at the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre and the Centre is helping him to build his reading and writing skills, which have really improved but he says there’s still work to do.
