Joining forces for people with a disability

New Western Learning Network empowers people of all abilities

Four community education organisations in Western Melbourne have launched a new network to raise awareness of their education programs amongst people with a disability, their families, disability support groups and organisations. The members of the new Western Learning Network are Laverton Community Education Centre, Williamstown Community and Education Centre, Wyndham Community and Education Centre and Yarraville Community Centre.

Network members deliver disability-specific and inclusive programs in Art & Culture, Community Participation, Employability Skills, Health and Wellbeing, Life Skills and Vocational Training.

Each provider in the network has access to a range of government funding from the Department of Education & Training for accredited and pre-accredited programs. “We are all very experienced providers of high-quality education and training to people of all abilities and we aim to continue to do so in the increasingly busy and crowded NDIS marketplace,” said Laverton Community Education Centre Manager, Bill Daly. “It’s very important to remember that the NDIS aims to support people with a disability to access education and training; not to replace existing education and training services.”

“If you’re an NDIS client we’ll help you identify the supports you need to participate successfully in our programs so that you can talk to your Planner or Support Coordinator to get these through your NDIS plan”, says Disability Worker, Beck Packer. “We’ll also provide you with a government funded education and training place which Victorians of all abilities are entitled to, so long as they meet normal eligibility criteria.”

The network aims to maintain and increase participation of people with a disability in community education providers and to build partnerships and strategic relations with other stakeholders in the sector, including disability employment services, disability support networks, National Disability Insurance Scheme (Local Area Coordinators, Planners) and Support Coordinators.
